Discovering the Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur
During our guided tours through the lush forest of Andasibe, in the heart of the Alaotra-Mangoro region, our guests have the chance to encounter one of Madagascar’s most iconic creatures: the Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur, scientifically known as Varecia variegata. This arboreal primate is native to Madagascar and is among the most beautiful and fascinating lemurs on the island.
Easily recognizable by its striking black-and-white fur, large ruff, and golden eyes, this lemur lives high in the rainforest canopy of eastern Madagascar. It is highly active during the day and can often be seen leaping skillfully between the trees. Very social, the Varecia lives in groups and communicates through loud, distinctive calls that echo through the forest.
Sadly, this species is now critically endangered due to habitat destruction and hunting. That's why its protection is a priority in parks like Andasibe-Mantadia, where important conservation efforts are in place.
At FHL Madagascar Travel, we offer responsible and ethical tours that let you experience this natural wonder while supporting local conservation initiatives. A visit to Andasibe is not just a nature adventure — it's an immersion into one of the last sanctuaries of unique global biodiversity.
